I don't think the band actually rehearsed anything. They just PLAYED and one simply joined in - jammed it, but jammed it eGOOD !! I had the unenviable task of 'replacing' the charismatic Art Wood himself for a bunch of 'outstanding' dates with The Saint Valentines Day Massacre. There was no way I could walk in his shoes, especially our FIRST gig ( was it Paris Olympia theatre ? ) which was HUGE anyway ... and my first entrance was dressed as a gangster, mock-shooting the audience !! Sid Vicious later did it ( with a pistol ) on " My Way" :)
By the way, thank you. You were very kind to me back then. I was definitely in Poland, somewhere I have photos to prove it. Also the Polish work permit in my passport.

I was set upon by a group of thugs in The Rhodes Centre in Bishops Stortford and thumped on the back of the head with a pint beer mug. I was eventually dragged out of the fray by the bouncers and taken to hospital. Because it was a Saturday night I was treated like any other drunk and stitched up without anaesthetic. The three stitches were in my head and not my hand. I was somehow returned to the Rhodes Centre to find all the guys waiting in the bandroom. The gig had been cancelled and, as far as I remember we didn't get paid. We all travelled home in the band wagon escorted out of town by the police. Aparently further threats of violence had been made.

I had a week in hospital in, I think, 1965 when I had my tonsils out. The band had a dep for me for that week but I don't remember who it was, maybe that was a Ron Wright (The Luvvers bass player was Tom Tierney, they had a drummer called Henry Wright).

Keef left sometime before SVDM, he centainly didn't leave because of it. His unpredictable experimentation on stage and his habit of picking fights with fellow members of the band made it impossible to carry on, so he was fired. I remember Art taking him to one side at rehearsal in our famous shed and doing the deed. It's a funny thing but I don't remember ever rehearsing with Colin, of course we must have rehearsed!

Regards to you all,
Malcolm Pool (Artwoods bass 1964 to their demise)

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4009067879087757296.post-82848362531927900822013-11-27T13:13:15.870+00:002013-11-27T13:13:15.870+00:00Watch out for a forthcoming 3-CD set of The Artwoo...Watch out for a forthcoming 3-CD set of The Artwoods on RPM Records in February or March 2014, which will include recordings live in Denmark and also BBC sessions and pre-Decca acetate tracks!Greedohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18075424900622608048noreply@blogger.com
